(Homebound Meals)
Another Service of: Southwest Missouri Office of Aging
What is "Daily Bread"?
Southwest Missouri Office on Aging (SMOA) was established in 1972 to provide programs and services for the population age 60 and over, in the Southwest Missouri. area. One of the services provided by SMOA is the homebound meals program or "Daily Bread." This service was designed to assist those homebound Seniors that may have difficulty with nutritious meal preparation.
What is the cost?
Although "Daily Bread" operates on a donation basis, no one is ever turned away because of inability to contribute. The only two qualifications are you must be 60 or over and homebound. Homebound Seniors may take advantage of this service one day per week, or everyday of the week, including weekends. If desired, "Daily Bread" will furnish frozen meals to be used on the weekends when the Senior Centers are closed.
Is there room for me or anyone I know?
Currently, SMOA serves a seventeen county area, and delivery of homebound meals has increased by 25% this year. Although this increase is positive, SMOA feels with 110,000 Seniors in the Southwest Missouri area, there are more "at risk elderly" without the means to eat properly.
There are many reasons wy there are homebound Seniors still being missed; a few of those reasons include inadequate information about the program and confusion abvout which "meal" program is which. We are encourageing folks to spread the word about "Daily Bread" because it is the only homebound meal program SMOA provides.
How can we help?
SMOA is seeking referrals for any homebound Seniors that may need this assistance. If you or anyone you know is interested in utilizing "Daily Bread," contact your local Senior Center or call the SMOA Central office for more information.
As this program thrives, there is an increasing need for volunteers, also. Volunteers may donate as much or as little time as their schedules may allow. One or two hours per week would be greatly appreciated. Drivers may be reimbursed for their gas mileage. Information on volunteer opportunities may also be obtained by contacting your local Senior Center or the SMOA Central office.
